Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC)

Introduction of Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC):
1. Sodium carboxy methyl cellulose, belonging to anionic cellulose ether, is in the shape of white or milky white fibrous powder or granules, with density 0.5-0.7 / cm2.
2. This food additive is odorless and tasteless, with good moisture absorptivity.
3. It is easily dispersed in water, as clear colloidal solution, but it is insoluble in organic solvent such as ethanol.
4. pH of aqueous solution is 6.5 ~ 8.5. When pH> 10 or <5, the viscosity will significantly decrease. Top performance is gained at pH7.
5. Sodium carboxy methyl cellulose is the anionic polymer often made from the reaction among natural cellulose, caustic alkali and monochloracetic acid, with molecular weight 6400 (± 1 000)g/mol.
6. CMC has been called “modified cellulose” by FAO and WHO.

Uses of Sodium Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC):
1. CMC is mainly used as a viscosity modifier or thickener, and to stabilize emulsions in various products including ice cream.
2. It is also an ingredient of many non-food products, such as toothpaste, diet pills, water-based paints, detergents, textile sizing and various paper products.
